Hello, I was just curious if anyone else has experienced high CPU usage in Studio One Version Two Professional? Even idle it uses more than my previous DAW but, when I burn a CD - Or mix down wav. I will get a High CPU usage warning.. I have never gotten that ever in my previous DAW. I am running a Quad Core Processor with plently of memory.. (And yes, my system is totally optimized for Recording). Now, I know Studio One will do the HYPER Speed mixdowns - which is what really taxes the CPU .. When doing a Digital release - you can actually choose to do it REAL time when in wav but, it does not give you that option when burning a CD - So, I will get the High CPU usage warning. I also noticed when doing a comparison with my previous DAW - Studio One seems to use more resources both memory wise and especially CPU. Anyone else see this?

Well, since you asked..
I haven't seen that personally but (granted) I rarely bother looking at the cpu meter much unless something stops playing right, starts dropping out, whatever. I just keep making music until my system can't take any more load and then I deal with it in one way or another (freeze, whatever) then I go back to making music.
The threshold for that (maximum cpu or core load) varies across multiple software and in the same software with different projects and different instrument arrangements. As long as everything is working, playing, I pretty much ignore it.
I do know (not saying you) that some people do kinda freak out when they see a single instrument cause the meter to register 20%.. and compare it to X and say 'It only shows 5% there.. is it broken?'.. when the two meters may not even be reading the same thing. I don't really bother with such minutia anymore, used to. Now I just work until I can't work anymore, then I bounce. Surprisingly, the work always gets done, in all of them.
My $0.02.

Hey LMike, thanks for the reply - Yea, I hear what you are saying - My CPU usage rarely even got up to 20% before (previous DAW) and so I have never had any reason to even worry about it. .. However, what made me take notice while using Studio One was while doing some publishing (taking already mixed down wav and doing the spacing ect.. for a CD project in Studio Ones publishing suite). When mixing down the wav for the digital release and burning a CD in Studio One I actually had a notice pop up saying HIGH CPU usage and when I checked it said atleast one of four cores was at 100% usage.. Now that makes you go hmmm...

Well, yeah.. that's what I was getting at. One of the FL Studio devs talked about that in some detail, why it's potentially problematic to move between various software and assume that what's called a cpu usage meter in various places are actually measuring and displaying the exact same thing the same way in all of them. He (being way more technically savy than I about such things) strongly suggests that this isn't the case.
But that's how most people compare it, perceive it, by what the meters say, as if they're all identical, which (according to him, and I tend to defer / agree) maybe isn't the best way to make that comparison.
Anyway, I hope it all works out for you. At the end of the day, you shouldn't use anything that doesn't allow completing the work without issue so if cpu (or anything else really) becomes problematic, yeah, I'd be looking elsewhere.

Can you provide a bit of detail as to what you have going on (effects/tracks/VSTi's etc..) in the project where you experience this?
Are you using 64-bit or 32-bit OS?
Are you using 64-bit or 32-bit S1v2?
If using 64-bit S1v2 are you bridging any 32-bit stuff (VST/VSTi's)?
Have you looked at the performance window in S1v2 and see which effects/instruments are using the most CPU?
Lastly, what is your audio buffers set to?
Let us know.
Thanks,
Tom

I believe that S1's 'CPU meter' actually doesn't measure CPU performance. I believe it moreso measures the ASIO buffer and how that's performing.
In my experience, it's been on par with Cubase. I haven't used many other DAWs.
I noticed that since S1 breaks down the CPU meter to the specific VST, I started paying attention to it a lot more. But in Cubase 5, since it didn't break it out.. I never really looked at it too long. Now. in S1, it/s like I start analyzing the damn thing lol. I find myself getting too wrapped up in it, so I have to pull away and focus on the fact that I haven't even had a pop in audio yet.. kind of like LMike referred to in his post.
Also.. I haven't noticed anything crazy in regards to mixdown & CD burning. I know that you can't really do anything in S1, and it looks like it's going to hang.. but it never actually hangs. It's almost like it's giving it all its got to render the audio lol. I'm fine with that. b/c it doesn't crash.
In version 1.6, I noticed that the audio engine was so good that there would be times the system wanted to hang after adding instruments too fast, or doing some crazy processing too quickly.. and at times the audio would actually slow down and hang.. but a few seconds later it would work it's way through it! lol Reliably too. That's what got me hooked on S1. Where Cubase would've crashed.. S1 just paused, calculated, and kept trucking along.
Since v2.. i've gotten way less performance hangs. I still get occasional crashes here n there, but not like I did in Cubase. I dont worry about crashing much when adding instruments. That only happens occasionally when I use JBridge. Also.. I was getting crashes when working going back n forth between Project & Song mode. That's pretty much it.
I got smart and started bouncing everything to audio when mixing & finalizing in project mode, and now it doesn't crash much. I think we may underestimate how much the VSTs really tax the system, despite having quad core 3.2GHz setups w/ 16GB RAM lol.

Some detail on our RAM meter, for those interested:
A few people wondered why they saw some RAM usage with empty Songs. The display includes the memory that program code needs, including application code and application data like skin bitmaps etc. It is virtual memory that S1 uses, no system memory is included.
Also, it does not reflect the actual RAM installed, it is the addressable virtual memory size.

I'm getting crazy CPU usage with OpenAIR, is that normal?
WHen I load up a large hall verb, it will go to 70 to 80%.

Thanks for clearing up that RAM issue Jonathan Like Toth, I'm also getting much higher CPU readings on Open Air than I was with 2.0.4 ? Any ideas about that?

Jonathan, how does S1 handle sounds loaded in Presence? Is that virtual memory also?
When I load an 887mb piano soundfont into Presence, the RAM meter goes to 97% .
And that's without any audio tracks or other instruments being used. Just the one Presence track loaded with the piano soundfont.

I had no effects, No VST's - no processing at all. These were just wav files of songs that were already mixed and mastered. I loaded them up into Studio Ones Publishing Suite just so I could add spacing and fades between songs and create a Digital Release in both wav and MP3, and then burnt a CD. While doing the Digital release in wav and burning the CD I got the HIGH CPU usage warning . Now I went back for the Digital release in wav and selected it to do it in real time.. Solved that Problem. However, you do not have any options when burning a CD - as I believe it will just automattically do the Hyper Speed crunching.. OH, I am using a 32 bit OS and buffers set to 512.

Ok guys - here is some new info - I am thinking there has to be a bug - CPU Throttling or something. I recorded one and then two tracks into Studio one.. While monitoring the cpu usage it was running like 25% and then would jump up to like 48% at times.. Thats rediculous.. One - to two tracks no effects, processing or nothing.. I then went to my previous DAW and pulled up a couple tunes one with 18 tracks (All Audio except for drums were Superiour Drummer 2.0), loaded with processing, effects, and running 6 busses also with processing and effects.. And the other tune had 38 Tracks all loaded with processing and effects and 8 busses loaded also (tracks were a mixture of mostly Audio and like 4 Midi/soft synths tracks).. CPU usage on even the 38 track tune was about 20% and no surging at all like i saw with the Studio One.. So, either Studio One is horribly not efficient .. or there is a bug... Cause to see that kind of CPU usage for one Audio track.. Wow.. thats rediculous.. Any thoughts? ANyone else notice CPU throttling? I sent in a request to Tech support - I will let you know what they say.

Having the exact same problem and like you I have A/b with another DAW, and the issue doesnt exist in the other DAW! What concerns me the most is the NUMEROUS forum write ups that I have read up to this point have been addressing this issue all the way back to 2010!!!1 WOW, this hasnt been fixed yet!! I have also read forums with very specific ways to basically REPROGRAM your PC,.. as resolve or excuses for this issue. I guess my question than would be, WHY DONT I HAVE TO DO THESE THINGS FOR MY OTHER DAW< IT WORKS FINE WITH THE SETTINGS THE WAY THEY ARE NOW! Obviously there is something wrong here, and beyond the contrary most of us dont have $400 just to throw around to find out that the softwre has ISSUES once the purchase has been made. ALL SALES FINAL

that's really odd. i haven't run into any of these problems, other than one or two plugs that seem to misbehave and/or are just cpu hogs in general. superior2 seems to behave well on this machine, and i don't tend to use times over about 3sec in openAIR, which might be why i haven't seen a problem with it, even using 4 or more instances. i typically run 20-ish vi's plus compressors, eq's, and delays without a hitch.
i'm only running an i5 w7 machine in 64 bit..it's a laptop, at that. it also behaved pretty well on my old 32 bit vista core2duo, aside from the memory limitation. neither machine is cutting edge or blindingly fast or anything. i've heard of these sorts of issue from those with much much faster machines, as well as slower ones, so i'm wondering where the 'gotcha' is?

Hi,
is there any way to get multiple audio interfaces in studio one? I've tried asio4all but that really doesnt work. it hangs S1 on every config change. Are there any other options?
thanks! BTW i'm on 64bit

Yes.. but you need the right type of interfaces to pull this off.. if you are using Studio One you can do this real easy with the Firestudio line of interfaces and mixers.. I use a Firestudio Tube as my main interface at home.. I have all the studio live consoles but I love the 1602.. so it comes and goes into my home system when I need more than 16 inputs from the FST.
I simply connect the 1602 to my PC (i have the drivers already loaded).. the 1602 now shows up in UC under the FST so i see 2 icons.. you need to go into Studio One and set up your I/O for them both to show up in the I/O pull down windows of S1.
I set up both mono and stereo inputs so I have a choice and not have to use 2 mono tracks for a stereo input.. it makes twice the Inputs in the I/O but real easy to select the them in Studio One..
you also need to set up your outputs.. and again I set up both mono and stereo.. I use the FST as the master for studio monitors and headphone sends since it is the stay at home unit.. but if you set em all up in I/O you can select in Studio One what gets sent where and how.. this was amazingly simple.
the Firestudio and studio Live series consoles seem to work well together in this fashion.. USB interfaces and mix and match interfaces and boards are another story.. I'd get the ones that actually work well together or you are asking for a lot of trouble.
In Studio One you can set up Templates.. I have several for using 2 interfaces.. set up your interfaces and I/O structure and set up a studio one session.. save this as a template and then simply select it before you start a session.. I set up several different session type Templates so it is always a simple click to get it going.

Ah, so if I read you correctly, the FST drivers will support multiple interfaces and handle it for you, while Studio1 will just see one driver with the inputs from multiple interfaces. UNfortuantely my situation is that I have an M-audio interface, and have just purchased a roland TR8 which gives another 11 outputs. So different drivers. Studio1 wont do that... Asio4all should, but it's not stable. crashes all around...

most likely they are incompatible so to do it you need compatibility.. all Firestudio interfaces are and work perfectly in this fashion with Studio One but the interfaces you listed compete for CPU attention and will lock and freeze or crash..

It's not a Studio One problem but a limitation of the ASIO driver protocol.
Don't confuse ASIO with ASIO4ALl, the latter being a wrapper for WDM drivers to make them appear like they are ASIO drivers. As you've already experienced ASIO4All can be very flakey.
Usually for ASIO drivers to support multiple devices a basic requirement is that they all come from the same manufacturer enabling the driver to permit multiple devices. Much of it has to do with synchronising of the sample rate lock in the hardware. HTH

Well it's sort of working in asio4all, my m-audio interface and the TR8 are now showing up. But it's wonky and i wont be using it unless I really need it. A pity though that this relatively easy tech problem isnt's solved in Windows and ASIO. Esp. for USB devices since the clock is synced over all devices on a usb buss and sync issues could be easily avoided.

Hi
I am trying to do a similar thing with Studio One on my iMac. I want to track my guitar through a GT-100 effects unit via USB then have the recorded sound come out through my Roland Duo-Capture. I have set up an Aggregate Device as per instructions given to me in a different thread but the output does not come through the Roland interface unless I have it connected to the GT-100. Is there a way of doing this that you know of?

Can you describe to me how you did this? I have exactly the same situation - a Firestudio + TR8.

I don't understand why you are fixated on USB output for this. What does that give you that just running the stereo 1/4' outputs into your existing interface can't give you? You are not going to have a difference in sound quality.
Why not just run your guitar straight into your interface, record the track dry and use the GT-100 as an outboard effect insert so you can have full re-amping capability? Then when you have the tone you want that sits well in your mix, print it to another track.
That way you have maximum flexibility with minimal effort.
If you absolutely know you don't want to reamp, then just use the 1/4' outputs direct into your interface and record that signal. Less flexibility but also least amount of effort (and thus the least chance for problems.)
I'm not trying to be overly critical.. maybe there is some feature the USB output gives you going into S1 that I am not aware of? But, I am a HUGE fan of the KISS principle.. if it's getting in the way of the creative process, get rid of it or do it another way!
